Situated on the banks of the River Shannon, Limerick is a classic medieval city. Established as a pre-Viking settlement in 812 AD, this city has a rich history and vibrant cultural scene. In 2014 it was given the title of Ireland’s city of culture. It is an excellent place to start one of your Day Tours, with trips leaving daily to the Cliffs of Moher, the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula.
The best way to get to Limerick from Cork or Dublin is by train or else with the CityLink bus service. As soon as you arrive, pop into our Day Tours office in Arthur’s Key Shopping centre, which also doubles as a tourist information centre. There, our friendly staff are happy to make any Day Tour bookings you would like, and also to give you all of the necessary information for your stay in Limerick City.
Famed as the home of Irish rugby, Limerick City has produced some of Ireland’s most well known rugby stars including Paul O’ Connel, Jerry Flannery, Shane Byrne, Keith Earls and John ‘The Bull’ Hayes. It is also home to Thomond Park, the home stadium to the Munster Rugby Team. In fact if you take a stroll out to the University of Limerick campus, you might catch a glimpse of the team training. The University of Limerick is also a beautiful spot. More like a village than a university, the campus is split in two by the River Shannon and it is connected by the famous living bridge, designed by the Eiffel Tower Group to look like a strand of DNA, it is a fantastic place to take a stroll on a clear morning. Our Day Tours drivers will happily pick you up in the morning at the University of Limerick campus, and then drop you back there in the evening where you can dance the night away at the Stables student bar.
If you’re looking for a good night out in the city, there is an abundance of bars and pubs. We highly recommend a meal in Chocolat on O’ Connel Street followed by a pint in Dolans on the Dock Road, where you will see some of Limerick’s best live acts. Previous bands have been The Rubberbandits, Mundy and The Coronas. Limerick city is particularly beautiful at night. The streetlights reflect beautifully off the city’s classic Georgian buildings, a little known fact is that Limerick boasts the second largest quantity of Georgian buildings in Ireland after Dublin.
If you’re trying to choose what Day Tour suits you the best, you may be interested to hear that the Cliffs of Moher are only an hour away from Limerick City. You can catch the bus from the University of Limerick campus stop, or else from just outside our Day Tours office on Arthur’s Quay. This is the most popular Day Tour leaving Limerick but you can also take a Ring of Kerry Day Tour or Dingle Day Tour from Arthur’s Quay. As always our staff in our Limerick office are more than happy to guide you in your decision and in tailoring a tour package that best suits your interests and the amount of time you have in Ireland.
And if you’re just passing through, Limerick is situated ideally to get to any of Ireland’s other major towns and cities, including Cork, Galway, Killarney and Dublin. Our Day Tours team may even be able to arrange for you to be transported to one of these spots at the end of your tour. As always just pop in to our Day Tours office and leave it to us! J
